Frequently Asked Questions

Is there and difference in Iridium signal quality between installed and portable devices?

No the only factor regarding signal quality is the location of the antenna. If you place a portable ADL160 or ADL180B at the same place you would place the separate antenna of the installed ADL190 Iridium signal quality will be the same.

Should I buy the device at the discounted price with 24 months satellite service commitment or at the normal higher price and then buy trip kits?

This will depend entirely on your usage pattern but most customer choose the discounted price and then the 24 months minimum commitment. Just a few pilots who usually focus their flying on a few big flying trips each year go for the trip kit option.

Should I buy a portable or an installed device?

This is a highly personal choice. An installed device is hidden and gives you a clean cockpit look. A portable device avoids any extra cost for installation work. If you are unsure also look at the portable ADL160. It is small and not very visible. You can run it as a portable device but hide the USB cable and get very close to the optics of an installed solution at minimal cost.

I have a G3X should I got for the wireless FIS-B interface?

This is a very nice feature. You see all the weather on the G3X as overlays. Also you do not have to install the expensive GTX345 transponder but the lower cost GDL39/50/52 will also work. If you have an G3X we recommend you go for this option.

I have a GTN750/650/G1000/G3000 should I go for the wireless FSI-B interface?

You will need the expensive GTX345(R) transponder (or a rare GDL88). If you already have the GTX345 we recommend to add the wireless FIS-B interface. ADL190 serial 1400 and up and ADL180B are already equipped from the factory at no additional cost. If you do not have the GTX345, it is an expensive device so we recommend not to upgrade the transponder just for the FIS-B, enjoy in flight weather on your iPad.

Can I operate the ADL190 without the iPad?

Some customer wish to have a solution which downloads weather without the iPad. This is possible with an installed ADL190 that displays on an Avidyne IFD440/540 or GTN650/750 (and all the sub versions of those devices). The ADL190 will detect the flight plan entered in the GPS navigator, download the weather and supply that to the navigator for display.

Can I connect multiple iPads / iPhones / Android devices?

Yes you can connect multiple devices simultaneously. They will all share the same weather you download just once.

Should I choose an ADL device or the Iridium Go solution?

The Iridium GO solution will download a little more weather data. It will download it a little faster than an ADL device and it can do voice phone calls. On the other hand the GO is quite expensive to buy, about 2 1/2 times more expensive to run , it does not have interfaces to installed avionics and no extra features like ADS-B traffic or AHRS. Often PC12 and jets will choose the GO while all others go for an ADL device.
